What is this benefit?

  • What is the Aid and Attendance benefit? 

A program implemented by The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to assist veterans and their spouses with senior home care financing. The benefit can also be used for assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

  • What are the asset limitations for the benefit?

Assets such bank accounts and investment accounts are limited to $138,000.   Your home is excluded from this asset limit.

  • What is the difference between military retirement pay and a VA Pension?

VA Pension is tax-free, but military retirement is not. Additionally, VA Pension is financial need and wartime service based, while military retirement is years of service based.

Who is this benefit for?

  • Who qualifies?

Any veteran 65 and older that has 90 days of active military duty with at least one day of wartime experience.

  • Do all veterans qualify?

Any veteran 65 and older that has 90 days of active military duty with at least one day of wartime experience.

  • Do spouses of veterans qualify?

Yes! Spouses married to veterans at their time of death qualify for the benefit.

  • What wartime periods are recognized?

World War II:  December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946

Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950 - January 31, 1955

Vietnam Era 1: November 1, 1955 - August 4, 1964  Veterans who served inside the Republic of Vietnam

Vietnam Era 2: August 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975

Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990 - date to be prescribed by Presidential Proclamation or law.

How do I receive this benefit?

  • What special documentation is needed?

Information requests differ for all individuals, but generally the documents needed are:

  1. Copy of benefits letters (Social Security, retirement, etc.)

  2. Certified DD-214 Military Discharge

  3. Proof of all assets and income

  4. Proof of insurance premiums

  5. Marriage and death certificates as appropriate for each case

  6. Medical records
