What is Aid & Attendance?

This tax-free pension covers the cost of home care for veterans and their surviving spouses.  This can also pay for assisted living centers or nursing homes.

What are the main requirements?

The veteran must have been active duty during a war time, their net worth is under $155,000 (excluding 1 home, 1 care and 2 acres of land), and they must show they need assistance with an activity of daily living.

Is this pension the same as military retirement pay or home maker/respite hours?

No, military retirement is based off years of service. Aid & Attendance requires a financial need to qualify. Home maker or respite hours are in a completely department of the VA. In fact, people can get these hours, plus Aid & Attendance hours!

When are the wartime dates?

  • World War II:  December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946

  • Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950 - January 31, 1955

  • Vietnam Era 1: November 1, 1955 - August 4, 1964  Veterans who served inside the Republic of Vietnam

  • Vietnam Era 2: August 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975

  • Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990 - date to be prescribed by Presidential Proclamation or law.

What are the activities of daily living?

Eating, bathing/showering, dressing, grooming, transferring, toileting, medication reminders​

How long does it take for the pension application to be approved?

The review process usually takes 3-4 months, BUT by working with us, your no out-of-pocket costs home care can begin in around a month. 

What documents are needed to complete the application?

Information requests differ for all individuals, but generally the documents needed are:

  1. Copy of benefits letters (Social Security, retirement, etc.)

  2. DD-214 Military Discharge

  3. Proof of all and income

  4. Proof of medical insurance premiums

  5. Marriage and death certificates as appropriate for each case

  6. Medical records
